The Nikon D3000 and D5000 are consumer grade cameras (plastic bodies, consumer user interface)
while the D90 is Nikon's professional grade Camera. Magnesium body, professional interface, in camera focus motor, in camera image stabilization)

The Nikon D3000 is the foundation camera mainly focused at beginners but is can create high quality images. The there is the D5000, that is similar build, a 12MP sensor, and the ability to do HD video.

The D90 is a step up in camera body build and still has an auto focus motor built into the camera body so there is a greater number of lenses available will it to keep full functionality, in particular auto focus.

I included some links to websites for you that can be good resources for information. The first link lists a side by side page listing the these Nikons: D3000, D5000, D90, D300S, and D700. This list will let you compare feature and specs, plus it has links to camera reviews that include sample images.

I am a Nikon user and I think you will be very pleased with whatever Nikon you choose.

If you think I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me.

Hope this helps.
