how to use the raw mode for stills in canon powershot sx 1 is?

All that information is in your user manual, but if you threw it away, you can call 800.OK-CANON for help.

The best way is to shoot RAW + JPEG. That way you can edit (sort) all your images using the JPEG image files and then you will only have to process the best of the best RAW files. This is will save you a lot of time sitting in front of the computer and give you more time behind the camera

The RAW format on a Digital Camera is for professionals. This format saves the picture in an unprocessed state, allowing you to edit everything on the computer later in a program like Adobe Photoshop. This is really for professionals planning to sell the picture. It takes maybe a few minutes minimum to make all the changes to a RAW picture, then process it. If you do not have the time to do all the processing on photoshop, then I suggest you just shoot in JPEG.
