I'd go with the Nikon. It's a good solid entry level DSLR. But I can't say anything against the Canon either. No doubt it's a worthy camera as well.
You'll have two groups of people telling you the other is better.I'd do as the other poster suggested & go to a camera store to get a hands on feel for both of them. One of them might have a better 'feel' to it for you.Go for that one.

Get a Pentax K-x in red! You won't be disappointed.

My advice is study up on those 2 cameras some more, and I agree with the other poster that the Pentax K-x is worth a look.

I added some links to websites below, the 1st being to a web page that lists the 3 cameras side by side and will allow you to compare features and specs. This page also has links to camera reviews that include sample images from the cameras for viewing.

Whatever you get I would just start off with the shorts zoom lens, likely a 18-55mm zoom, and get shooting and then discover what other accessories you need or want.

Just some quick notes:

(here is the cameras with basic estimated prices)
Nikon D5000 12MP DSLR Digital Camera w/18-55mm VR Lens - $649
Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D) 15MP DSLR w/EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens - $750
Pentax K-x 12MP DSLR with 18-55mm Zoom lens - $550

All 3 have HD video, the Nikon has a movable/adjustment LCD screen which would seem a plus for video use. The Pentax I think has the stronger high ISO performance which can be an advantage in low light situations. All 3 are excellent brands that make great cameras, find what is the best fit for you.

I added some other links to dealers but go to youtube and search these camera models for video reviews and sample of what they can do in video (also vimeo.com to find sample videos from these cameras).

Photo.net has discussion forums and you can ask people who own these cameras already what they think and at Amazon.com there are customers reviews of these products, also customers are at B&H Photo and Adorama's websites on products.

Hope this helps.

i am a Nikon fan but can't say anything negative about Canon. both choices are equally good for a beginner. the choice comes down to personal preferences on how each camera feels in your hands. how comfortable you are holding it, as well as wearing it around your neck, how the function bottons feel or operate. the best thing to do is to go to a camera store, not a big chain store, where the folks are a little more knowledgable about the cameras and the lenses that you would choose.
i would suggest pairing your D5000 with either a single lens (18-200mm VR) or two lens (18-55mm VR and either a 55-200 VR a 70-300mm VR) these lenese should provide you ranges for your everyday needs.
