Good Digital Cameras for a Good Price? (:?

I'm looking to take up photography as a hobby, but i need a better Digital Camera first! I would like a Digital Camera thats not just "good", a little better than that, but not a full on professional camera. Please keep in mind that i am not a millionaire. (:

Any camera suggestions?

i suggest for a start to get the nikon d40. its only 500 dollars which is really good for any beginner slr camera

the equivalent but a tad bit better then the D40 is the Canon rebel xs.
